Sun Araw
Cameron Stallones is an American musician who works under the name Sun Araw. Previously a member of the band Magic Lantern, he has released several albums of experimental music, including a collaboration with Jamaican reggae group The Congos. He has also worked as part of the Not Not Fun label 'supergroup' Vibes.ral albums of experimental music, including a collaboration with Jamaican reggae group The Congos. He has also worked as part of the Not Not Fun label 'supergroup' Vibes.

Every release up to this one has been thematic, inspired by certain key instrumentative components from Afrobeat, to Jamaican dancehall, to Greco-Romanic scales. (2012’s Icon Give Thank saw Stallones go to Jamaica to record with The Congos.) But a surprising feature about Belomancie, which is also key to how one experiences it, is how Stallones, perhaps out of a bored restlessness, doesn’t surround this record with a specific country or style. Sure, we still have the rock solos that harken back to Jimi Hendrix and “Orange Sunshine” acid, and we still have his slightly off-beat, monotone vocals, with lyrics reminiscent of Horse_ebooks (it’s important to note here that Sun Araw’s own Twitter account, with tweets such as “AS SHE SPLITS THE CHILI” and “SURPRISING & CATHARTIC,” mirrors the textuality of Horse_ebooks). Wow!

D/P/I
One of the most interesting connections between D/P/I menagerie of projects is his utilization of space: Halogen buzzfeeds, portafilter pressure sequences, fractured defrost cycles — resonance that comes in a variety of forms and fills each soundscape with unequal measure. On ESPRESSO DIGITAL’s opening number, Gray uses a heartfelt wedding speech to create space amid the presented setting and the context of his latest mixtape. Behind the voices (and their accompanying refrain) lies a thumping hum that inhabits the track’s entirety; it feels like the scene is being played on a TV set surrounded by broken appliances — the whirring of a busted fridge or an unfastened bulb — that bleed through into the mix. If you focus on the words and the melody within that introductory piece, then “SHE CAN YELL” acts as a slap straight across the groom’s besotted chops. And if you are drawn in by the hum, then the latter track bursts open with tenacious force, lubricating a desire for more crushed electronic snapping, flickered static, bludgeoning bass, and twisted crystals. It’s already been a full year since the incredible HEAD TEAR OF THE DRUNKEN SUN, and within a few minutes of tucking into this new release, fond memories of the D/P/I debut are instantly rekindled.

Weyes Blood
Natalie Mering’s solo performance under her Weyes Blood moniker tiptoed past the audience’s defenses by way of austere torch songs and tape hiss, distilling a thematic palette of loss, hope, and solitude into swells of effect-pedal abstraction and operatic vocal grandeur. She paced the stage with mic in hand, sketched out her internal landscape, and elevated her tracks to new emotional plateaux with stomps on her loop pedal that layered her voice into cascading harmonies. Mering capped off the gig with an angelic rendition of Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talking,” draped in a tape’s sustaining arpeggios and paced at a languid crawl that elegantly reinscribed the overfamiliar source material. We swayed, close to swooning, and glimpsed new facets in that line, “Only the echoes of my mind.”
