It's different, though, when Pretty Pretty takes the stage. Theirs is a music just too infectious to turn your nose up at. Theirs is a sound capable of penetrating our smug exoskeletons, allowing us to forget how to be cool and remember how to have fun. Atop a stout and sturdy foundation of electronic beats, chirping keyboards and sinewy guitar tones find their way into our spinal cords and the soles of our shoes. We move without thinking, finally unburdened.
It's joy that makes the music of Pretty Pretty so undeniable; the kind of palpable joy that comes from long and intimate collaboration. Justin "JB" Bowles and Mike Clair have been playing together in various iterations for over seven years, and their instincts are thoroughly attuned. They're an odd couple, for sure. JB, with the fashion sense and mischievously twinkling eye of an African Trickster God, croons like a doo-wop cherubim. Mike, vaguely reminiscent of a grown-up Charlie Brown, sends forth winding, gently grasping guitar lines that wrap themselves around the keyboard melodies like the vines of the Great Pumpkin. Somehow, they really, truly compliment each other, and the result is unselfconscious dance pop that is genuinely engaging.
This duo may not have requisite pretension to conquer the world, or even their hometown, but that's not what their after. They're not about affect or swagger, they're not about the future or the past. Their pursuit is fun, shared in the present moment, dumbly, brilliantly, an actual connection.
