2018“Talent! A Show” Benefit to OurVoice featuring Local Artists!
AprilDoors 7pm, Show 8pm - $Donations
ASHEVILLE, NC—For such a small city, Asheville is home to an astonishing number of talented performers in a wide range of art forms. It’s also chock-full of activists who are committed to making a difference. For this reason, friends and writers Leah Shapiro and Mandy Gardner are coproducing Talent! A Show, an evening of curated performances, on Monday, April 23, at The Mothlight in West Asheville to benefit Our VOICE.
This event is free and open to the public ages 18+. Donations at the door are strongly encouraged (cash, check, and card) and a portion will go directly to Our VOICE, a non-profit crisis intervention and prevention agency that serves victims of sexual violence, ages 13 through adult, in Buncombe County.
Mandy, who has twice won Moth StorySLAM in Asheville, has been hosting talent shows at her house in West Asheville for years, using her back porch as a stage. The idea for Talent! A Show grew out of that. “April is sexual violence awareness month, so the timing is perfect,” says Leah, who was recently appointed to serve on Our VOICE’s board of directors. “This show is our love letter to Asheville—to the performers, the community, and to a great organization that has helped so many people who live here.”
This show runs the gamut of entertainment, from magic and juggling to dance and sketch comedy. If there was a theme, it would be talent—and there’s no shortage of it. Performers are: Chris Rodrigues & Abby the Spoon Lady; Forty Fingers & A Missing Tooth; How to Ruin Your Life Sketch Comedy Troupe; Kathleen Hahn of DANCECLUB Asheville; Kevin Evans and Aaron Price; Liquid Sirens; Sneaky McFly; Tina & Her Pony; and Tom Peters & Shane Parish. Mandy and Leah will serve as emcees of the event. Between acts, brief live auctions will take place (to further benefit OV) with items from Vortex Donuts, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and Orbit DVD, and select audience members will be encouraged to come onstage and share a talent in under 60 seconds.
“As a dancer, it’s rare that I have the opportunity to share the stage with musicians, jugglers, and magicians,” says Kathleen Hahn, owner and lead instructor for DANCECLUB Asheville who will perform a pole routine. “What a treat! I’m really looking forward to being a part of this inaugural event showcasing so much local talent.”
Executive Director of Our VOICE, Angélica Wind, says, "With so many survivors speaking up, and with social media movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp, we know that we need to break the silence around the pervasive issue of sexual violence on both a national and a local level. Now is the time to talk about it. Now is the time to come together as a community to make change happen. Community events like Talent! create spaces for people to support each other and stand in solidarity with all people whose lives have been impacted by sexual violence."
“On any given night there are amazing shows of all kinds happening around town,” says Mandy. “It can be hard to choose what cool thing you want to go do! With this show, you don't have to choose. You get to see it all on one stage for a great cause! The Mothlight was the first venue we considered and asked to host the show; they are an Asheville treasure and have been since they opened their doors.”
Interviews are available upon request.
