Knives and Daggers (Album Release Show!)
Knives & Daggers (Asheville, NC) is a dynamically turbulent, noisily emotional blend of shoegaze and heavy-riffed post rock. Three fuzz guitars take turns with rhythm and lead, drone and echo, and carefully composed harmonies, sometimes accompanied by classical string instruments. The drums and bass are steadfast and effortlessly assemble the rhythm through the graceful tangle of the guitars.

The five-piece band is currently working on their second album, a follow-up to the bittersweetly dark debut What Hurts the Most, which was self-released by the band in 2011 on CD, vinyl, and digital download.

The band is fronted by two independent songwriters, Lauren Carol Brown and Kevin Stanford, both guitarists and vocalists. Oddly, Brown and Stanford hail from different musical backgrounds and influences – Brown from the orchestra and loud instrumental projects, and Stanford from reflective, guitar-oriented shoegaze bands – but there is a symbiotic thread between the two backgrounds which brings consistency to the K&D sound.

“I tend to pull from the ebb and flow and oscillations of classical music pieces, and Kevin writes introspective shoegaze ballads with noisy explosions,” Brown says. “Somehow it works.”

Brown and Stanford are joined by drummer Jonathan Bass, guitarist Sam Hunt, and bassist Jeremy Joachim, a lineup which elegantly and vigorously supports the massive sound that the band is becoming recognized for. It hasn’t always sounded this way, though.

Knives & Daggers has been performing since 2006 but the band has cemented its current sound only in the past few years, having stemmed initially from a quieter verse/chorus approach. Nowadays, many of the songs are instrumental, often written in “movements,” though there are also still several songs that feature vocals.

“Traditionally I write most of the instrumentals and [Stanford] writes most of the vocal songs, but we are starting to re-shape those boundaries,” Brown says. “Now that we’ve figured out what our common theme is, it’s becoming easier to write and perform and, in a sense, imitate each other’s styles.”

Andrew Larson, frontman of alternative noise rock trio Telecine, is recording Knives & Daggers’ new album at his studio in Waynesville, NC. “I see my job with K&D as a documentarian of the band in a room,” he says. “Their expectations have been to achieve the honest sound of the band, and not just an ‘over-dubbed-to-death’ comped exercise in ProTools proficiency.”

The grit of K&D’s live show is indeed what the band intends to capture. “I think it is important to deliver a side of our band in a way that people recognize when they see us live,” Stanford says of the recording process for the yet untitled album. “With strings very present on the first album, we felt it was time to deliver an album that features our very guitar nature, which is really at the core of K&D.”

Larson adds, “This record will be very close to what you would experience at a K&D show: moments of sorrow-filled tender guitar lines bequeathed by giant fuzzed-out monstrous swells and all out static-y chaos.”

Knives & Daggers plans to support the new album with a string of shows and a tour, while also continuing to promote and distribute their debut album What Hurts the Most.

“Behind this album coming out, we’re looking forward to touring again and playing in some of the cities where we were fortunate to gain new fans before,” Stanford says. “With the album expected to be completed by early summer, look for shows throughout mid-to-late 2013.”
Cobra Horse
The men of Cobra Horse met by chance on the penthouse rooftop of a downtown Rio office building that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. The place was straight out of Condé Nast Traveler. Sleek and ultra-modern in design, the stark-white open-air interiors possessed clean, smooth lines, while at the same time overtly whispering money, money, money. The roof was no different. Behind them stood a blue-and-white-striped cabana. A bowl of exotic fruits lay on the table between them. The ocean breeze caressed their skin and scattered the scent of the city over them—coffee beans and coconut oil and sea foam and sugar cane...
