FoothillsNestled in a cove just a few miles from The Smoky Mountains, you will find self-described "human", Chase Hudson. Chase is one half of the group 2PPM, and also records and performs solo as Foothills, where he layers electric piano, and various percussive and melodic synths for his meditative explorations of sound. The Foothills project represents a reflection on the natural world in it's purest condition, an appreciation for slow and natural processes, and it is also a reference to beginnings, and an acceptance of the work that the journey of life requires.
Many artists, can easily champion the ideas of self-sufficiency, of "back to the land" aesthetic, of New Americanism, or more specifically, New Worldism, but few are really willing to put in the work to enact these ideas. Chase lives this aesthetic everyday; in turn it is not an aesthetic, it is a facet of his existence, to create art that speaks to the wonder of cultivation. Chase helps on a farm where he is working towards a sustainable and self-sufficient lifestyle with his wife and child. He has left the city structure for a more fulfilling and controllable existence, gardening, tending to chickens, fruit trees, berries, learning "the process", respecting the notion of understanding one's true spirit through the act of cultivating the land. These elements--dedication, patience, persistence, joy, cultivation--are inherently present in the Foothills recordings, and in turn, make Chase's music a skeleton key in a society full of locked doors.
Chase's first proper Foothills recordings were released on cassette (June 2013) through Patient Sounds of Fort Collins, CO. "I really love both the fundamentals of the Foothills project, the concerns of the project, and also the recordings are just so lush and beautiful, so it was a natural fit. Chase leads a very incredibly enriched lifestyle, and works hard for it, and I am so happy to be able to present artists like Chase. Melodically I think NEW WORLD is one of the most accomplished PS tapes. It is so tactile, so easy to listen to, but the compositions are challenging! ...That tape, 'New World,' is one I consider one of the most sacred jewels in the Patient Sounds catalog, for a myriad of reasons... Embracing many of the ideals we hold crucial in the Patient Sounds manifesto, and also enacting them with more dedication and more concentration than any other artist on the PS catalog, I would like to insist that Chase's work is critically important in this critical moment in independent music." -Matthew Sage of Patient Sounds
Naturally, this is just the beginning for Foothills. Chase is currently exploring music for the recording of, "Hollow Earth", his follow-up LP release with Patient Sounds, set to release in 2014.
Difference CloudsZach Smith‘s Difference Clouds project reaches out with spacey synth shouts and arpeggiated atmospheres sent down from the bluest sky. Running the gamut from Oneohtrix-esque electro-pastiche to Mist-like cosmic trips. We are seeing sound in full-spectrum color; with blues diving into pinks, revolving back into themselves as greens and reds. It’s a kaleidoscopic, deep trip into the mind sentient hardware — pulsing, moving fluid-like, handling its own controls.
